Day 1 - May 18 | Rome

Day 2 - May 19 | Umbria
LOCATION: 10 AM Pick Up at Hotel Capo D’Africa

Drive to Orvieto - 1.5-hour private bus ride.
Departing from the bustling streets of Rome, we are soon embraced by the tranquil Umbrian countryside, where rolling hills adorned with olive groves and vineyards stretch as far as the eye can see. As the road winds through the verdant Umbrian countryside, the silhouette of Orvieto's ancient limestone cliffs comes into view, crowned by its majestic Duomo.

Wood Sculptors - Donatella, Gaia, and Simonetta are the daughters of Gualverio Michelangeli who was a successful wood sculptor in Orvieto. When their father passed, the sisters carried on his style of sculpting by layering wooden shapes to build whimsical creations. Their creativity along with their detailed artisanal skills make their sculptures one of a kind in this must see workshop.

Castle Walking Tour - Dating back to the 13th century and linked to the Templar Knights, Castello Di Monterone sits on a hilltop overlooking the town of Perugia and the rolling green hills of the Umbrian countryside.

L’Antica Deruta has been a top maker of specialty ceramics since 1950. Using techniques dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries, the shop, run by the fourth generation, Giorgio and Camilla Morretti, follows Deruta’s ceramic traditions. Their boldly colored, intricately painted designs are what separates their world-renowned majolica pottery from other types of ceramics.

Explore Perugia - Perugia’s museums are breathtaking. The National Gallery of Umbria includes centuries-old paintings and sculptures. These important museums will bring you back in time with their artwork, but also with the dazzling architecture of the buildings themselves.

Hand Woven Textiles - Giuditta Brozzetti founded The Giuditta Brozzetti Workshop in 1921. It is now run by her great-granddaughter Marta Cucchia. Today Marta and her apprentice run one of the last hand-weaving studios in Italy, where they create gorgeous textiles on original working looms from the 18th and 19th centuries. It’s up to Marta and a shrinking number of her colleagues to preserve Perugia’s medieval weaving culture for future generations.

Truffle Hunting/Cooking Class - When it comes to artisanal foods, fresh truffles are culinary gold. Umbrians have harvested the elusive fungi for at least 600 years. Saverio Bianconi learned truffle hunting from his father, and eventually turned it into the family business. Today, Saverio and Gabriella are teaching the next generation, their two sons Andrea and Maurizio, how to hunt for truffles. And they also incorporate the family dogs!

Bottega Tifernate, Replica Art - Siblings Stefano and Francesca and their father Romolo are the owners of Bottega Tifernate. Their goal is to recreate the most famous masterpieces of the Italian artists using the ancient renaissance technique. Romolo invented the pictographic machine to make the paintings more precise without losing their authenticity. They are the only ones in the world doing this kind of work.

Grevi - Hat Maker - The Grevi family started making hats in the city of Signa just outside of Florence in 1875. The Tuscany region has been manufacturing straw hats for centuries, and Signa was at the center of the trade. The company is run by siblings, Guiseppi, Roberta, and Sylvana. As fashions evolved, so has the business to keep up with hat trends. Their hats are sold around the world and have even appeared in films.

Perfume Makers - Florence was the world capital of perfumery during the Renaissance thanks to Catherine de Medici. After Dr. Giovanni Massimo discovered Medici’s manuscript of recipes for fragrances, he was inspired to continue the art. Now daughter Francesca, runs the company and works in their shop in Florence where they also have a laboratory.

Goldsmith - Jewelry Maker - Master Goldsmith Paolo Penko picked up the art of handcrafting jewelry from his father. But Paolo took his craft to the next level while studying at the Art Institute of France. That is also where he met his wife Beatrice, an expert gemologist. Together, and working with their sons, Alessandro and Riccardo, they are creating one-of-a-kind jewelry masterpieces. Their handcrafted designs, often inspired by Florentine architecture, reflect centuries of history and tradition in their home city of Florence.
Leather Makers - Pelletteria Artigiana Viviani is rooted in the great tradition of Florentine and Tuscan craftsmanship in manufacturing handmade leather products. Created in 1965 by Master Craftsman Renato Viviani—now operated by daughter Viviana and grandson Leonardo—we will get a behind-the-scenes look at the craftsmanship and passion that goes into the making of their luxury purses.

Custom Frame Makers - The Maselli family shop was first opened in 1955 in Florence, by Paolo Maselli. Now son Gabriele and grandson Tommaso, continue his passion of creating high-quality handmade frames. With a meticulous attention to detail, and using the same tools and techniques from the Renaissance era, each frame is a work of art in its own right.
Aperitivo with the Mosaicists - Brother and sister Catia and Leonardo Scarpelli carry on the art of Florentine mosaic known as commesso. Their work requires incredible detail, from the intricate design, choosing the right stones to shaping and cutting them for hours on end. Most of his masterpieces take months to complete. Their father, Renzo, first opened the shop in downtown Florence in 1972.
